HISTORY IS MADE AS SILVER BAND WIN SCOTTISH CHALLENGE CUP
Coalburn Silver Band brought the most successful year in the band’s history to a close with a resounding victory in the Scottish Challenge Cup at Perth last weekend.
The band was comfortable winners in a fiercely fought competition, overcoming a field of 7 bands to lift their latest piece of silverware. They played a test piece entitled ‘Hollywood’ by Goff Richards, the musical direction from the band’s conductor Gareth Bowman was exceptional and commented on by both the adjudicators Ian Porthouse and Andrew Duncan. Also of note were the performances from the bands solo trombone Elizabeth Meikle, Flugel Horn Alex Sheridan and percussion team supported by a fabulous all round band sound.
There was further success for the band when they were crowned Scottish Brass Band of the year 2009 (3rd section), band president Alan Court was on hand to receive the commemorative banner along with the Scottish Challenge Cup, these latest honours added to the titles of Borders Champions, Fife Brass Band champions along with a highly commendable 5th place at the British Championships and promotion to the 2nd section, bring to a close the most successful year in the bands 107 year history.
The band now looks forward to a busy December with a full engagement list; they also have a concert with the Spirit of Life Youth Choir on Saturday 6th February 2010 at the Jubilee hall, Lesmahagow
